They sit there, quietly, or sometimes not so quietly really, but what they're doing is costing you money without you realizing it.

Usually you can see where your money is going.  The numbers rolling upwards on the petrol pump.  The credit card receipts you sign while shopping.  The ever-increasing waistlines of the Cash Weevils which feed on the notes in your wallet when you're having a night out.

We're giving away a mega useful DataBank (HDD not included)
for the best reason why you needed to buy today's consumption meter!!!

But your household appliances and gadgetry just sit there, year after year, and never really tell you just how much they cost.

So you've got the message: you want to be "green", to reduce carbon emissions, save the rainforests and make sure your kids will have some dry land to live on when it's time for them to leave the house.  But how do you really know what the worst offenders are?

Today's Thingy is here to settle the question once and for all.  The Electric Power Meter not only measures volts and amps and all that fun stuff, but you can enter your peak and off-peak power costs and it will add up totals for you!  So you can get numbers measured in dollars, not just kilowatt-hours.

Finally you can really know how much it costs to run the dryer for an hour, or your computer for a weekend.  What your fridge is really costing you.  Oh, and try it on a hairdryer sometime - wow!

Now some modern gadgets like big TVs, photocopiers or anti-aircraft radar targeting systems have 'soft-off' standby modes, where it's off-but-not-really-off - ready to go at a moment's notice.  They can be sucking a lot less juice than when they're being used, sometimes even too low a level for this meter to accurately read, but then that's what the little switches on the wall outlets are for... just shut 'em off when you're not using them!

Better grab yours now, they won't be here tomorrow!

Do your appliances measure up?
One way to find out...

Menus

Pressing the FUNC button repeatedly will cycle through the following menus:

Volt AC -> Amp -> Watt-> Max Watt -> kWh -> Total Price ->  Total Price 1 -> Total Price 2

Volt AC simply shows the Voltage currently being supplied.  The unit can handle from 200V to 276V.  We assume it is measuring RMS voltage, not peak to peak.

Otherwise we’d not be able to multiply volts by amps to get the power.

Amp show the current being drawn at that instant.  It can handle up to 10A of current.

Watts shows the power being drawn by device you have plugged in at any given moment.

Watts max is a register which shows the maximum power drawn at any instant since you last reset that register.  Press and hold the FUNC key while in the Watts max function, to reset the register to zero.

kWh is a register which shows the total accumulated energy consumed since you last reset the register.  Press and hold the FUNC key within the kWh function, to reset the register to zero.
